The two HISD-specific constraints that most surprise families
1. Course credit limit: 3 per administration
A student cannot earn more than 3 course credits in a single HISD CBE administration. Practical impact: if you're planning to accelerate in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Biology in the same window — that's the ceiling. Adding Foreign Language on top requires staggering across administrations.
2. Attempt limit: 2 per subject during ENTIRE HISD enrollment
Even more restrictive: your student can attempt CBE in the same course/subject at most twice during their entire time in HISD. If your student takes Algebra 1 CBE at the end of 7th grade and doesn't pass at 80%, they have exactly one attempt left for that subject across all their remaining K-12 years in HISD.
This makes preparation quality matter more in HISD than in some other districts. Don't burn attempts on unprepared testing.
